Process integration

Process integration relates to an overall process optimization in chemical processes. It emphasizes in a holistic approach to the whole process, rather than focusing on individual equipment, or the phenomena occurring in individual operations. The research in process integration started in the 1980s with an emphasis on energy efficiency.

Although research in process integration now encompasses a much wider area than energy efficiency, the greatest emphasis is still placed on process design, retrofit and operational optimisation for energy savings.
